Setting Up a PPP Connection on a Windows NT 4.0

If you are already familiar with the details of setting up a PPP connection on a Windows NT 4.0 and just want the necessary server information, go to the Basic Account Configuration.

Step 1: Verify that TCP/IP Protocol is Installed

Press the start button, select Settings..., then Control Panel. Double-click the Network icon. You should get a dialog box. Make sure the Protocols tab is selected. If TCP/IP Protocol is present, you're ready to proceed to step 2.

Install TCP/IP as a protocol if it is not already installed it will want you to bind it to an adapter but you can cancel out without losing anything. Next you must restart the OS.

Step 2: Configure your TCP/IP Protocol

Go to the Control Panel and double-click the Network icon. You should get a dialog box. Make sure the Protocols tab is selected. Click on the TCP/IP Protocol and press the Properties... button. You should get the TCP/IP Properties box.

There are four sections in this dialog box:

1. IP Address -- Check the "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server" option.

2. DNS Configuration

Select the Enable DNS option.
In the Host box, enter get
In the Domain, put accesscom.com.
In the DNS Server Search Order section,
Type 64.240.196.2 and press the Add button.
Type 64.240.196.3 and press the Add button.
The Domain Suffix Search Order section should stay blank.

3. WINS Address -- No changes needed from the default.

4. Routing -- No changes needed from the default.

When you're all done setting these options, press the OK button. Then press the OK button in the Network dialog box. Windows NT will ask you to reboot. Press Yes

Step 3: Set up the Connection Entry

1. Click on My Computer from the desktop then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

2. Click the New button.

3. In the Basic tab, type in "Access Internet" (or whatever you want). Enter the Access Numbers (POPs) you will be using to connect to Access Internet. If you have call waiting, you may want to put *70, (with the comma) in front of the our number. This will disable it for this call only. Your modem should be shown in the Dial using:box. Press the Configure button and you'll get a dialog box.

4. Select the Server tab. In Dial-Up Server type, choose "PPP:Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet". Make sure that TCP/IP is selected as the only Network protocol. Next press the TCP/IP Settings button.

5. Click on TCP/IP Settings button

Check Server assigned IP address
Check Specify name server addresses
Primary DNS: 64.240.196.2
Secondary DNS: 64.240.196.3
Leave the rest blank
Click on the OK button

6. Select the Script tab. Select "Run this script" under the option of After dialing (login). Press the Edit script button. Scroll down until you find the quote similar to the following:

; The following two lines cause RAS to ignore all responses
; until the remote computer requests your login name. If the remote
; computer prompts you with a word other than login you must
; replace ogin: in the line below with the exact text the
; remote computer uses.

Edit the entry to look like the following:

      OK=<match>"ost:"
      LOOP=<ignore>
      COMMAND=ppp<cr>

      OK=<match>"ogin:"
      LOOP=<ignore>
Save the changes and close the window. Press OK.

Step 5: Dialing in and Getting Connected

At the Dial-up Networking screen select Access Internet Communications and click the Dial button. You will see a login screen asking for your username, password, and domain name. Enter your username and password for Access Internet Communications and accesscom.com for domain name. After a few rings, the Access Internet Communications host machine should answer.
