Many readers reported the dropped connection problem (where accessing an x2 line - or even a V.90 line in some cases - results in a dropped connection about 2 minutes after logging on). For example, One Netcom user writes: "My connection is always dropped within 2 minutes, and my connection speed hovers around 45K. Netcom, who operates both x2 and V.90 on the same number - the sound of the carrier handshake is now considerably different, so this user assume the connection is V.90." However, an almost equal number of readers said they did not have this problem at all.

"Downgrading not possible" If you decide you want to downgrade back to the previous firmware, you are out of luck. According to several readers, Global Village said that there is no way to do this.

"Work-around: disable V.90" However, Global Village has been offering a work-around for those that have this symptom: Disable the V.90 protocol (but allow x2 and V.34+).

If you use FreePPP, you can do this directly in the init string (setup) field. Simply change the string to: AT&F1S32=66.

[While we are on this subject:

To disable x2; allow V.90 and V.34+, use: AT&F1S32=34

To disable V.90 and x2; allow V.34+, use: AT&F1S32=98]

If you use OT/PPP, you will have to modify GV's modem script (located in the Modem Scripts folder in the Extensions folder). Most reports referred to the script called "GV x2 for ARA 2.1/OT-PPP." However, one user writes: "According to GV's Fax on Demand document #2304, you have to use the GV 28.8-56K for ARA 2.1/OT/PPP script, (which is indicated for the Teleport V.90 modem), not the GV X2 for ARA 2.1/OT/PPP script, which is indicated for the X2 modem that I was updating."

In either case, to make the change, make a copy of the script and give it a slightly different name. You will need to temporarily change the script's file type to "TEXT" so that you can open it in a text editor (such as SimpleText). Then search for the string: A3S7=60. Add S32=66 immediately after that string. Now save the file, and change its type back to "mlts." Finally, go to the Modem control panel and select the modified script.

"Global Village V.90 upgrade and Call Waiting" Regarding some mention of a "new" Call Waiting feature in the Global Village V.90 upgrade, one user offers this explanation: "This was a feature that K56 flex modems had, but x2 modems didn't. Upgrading your firmware to V.90 adds the Caller ID distinctive ring to the x2 modems."
